Why Your Feet Go Numb on the Slopes

Counterintuitively, it's usually caused by a boot that's too loose, not too tight. A boot buckled tight in one spot and loose in another restricts blood flow at the tight point, and a foot with poor circulation gets cold fast regardless of socks.

What It Is

Feet that go numb or painfully cold partway through a day’s skiing, even in a boot that otherwise feels fine. One of the most common complaints we hear, and one of the most fixable.

Why It Happens

Counterintuitively, it’s usually caused by a boot that’s too loose, not too tight. A boot buckled too tight in one spot and too loose in another restricts blood flow at the tight point, and a foot with poor circulation gets cold fast regardless of how many socks you add. Thick socks that bunch or compress around the toes make it worse, not better. A liner that’s packed out and no longer holding the foot snugly is another common cause.

What It Feels Like

Starts as a dull ache or tingling, usually in the toes first, that progresses to numbness if ignored. Often one foot is worse than the other, which is a useful clue that it’s a fit issue rather than just “cold weather.”

What We Do About It

We check buckle tension evenly across the whole boot, not just whether it’s “done up” — an even, moderate hold beats one buckle cranked tight to compensate for a loose liner elsewhere. We’ll look at your sock choice too: a single thin-to-medium technical sock almost always outperforms two pairs or a thick ski sock, which just compresses circulation further. Where the liner itself has packed down, a reflex or heat-mouldable replacement liner can make a bigger difference than anything else. Heated insoles are worth discussing if you run cold regardless.

Boots We’d Start With

If you’re already getting cold feet in a boot you own, bring it in before you buy anything new — nine times out of ten it’s a fit and sock problem, not a boot problem.
