Wide Feet? It’s the Boot, Not You

Every boot shell is built around a last — a fixed width across the ball of the foot. Shops stock plenty of brands, but rarely the full spread of lasts within each, so it's easy to try boots that are all roughly the same width.

What It Is

A wide forefoot, or just a foot that’s wider than the “average” last a boot is built around. It’s one of the most common reasons an off-the-shelf boot never quite feels right, no matter how many sizes you try.

Why It Happens

Every boot shell is built around a last — a fixed width measured across the ball of the foot, usually somewhere between 98mm (narrow, race-oriented) and 106mm+ (generously wide). Shops stock a range of brands, but very few stock the full spread of lasts within each one, so it’s easy to end up trying boots that are all roughly the same width without realising it.

What It Feels Like

Pressure or numbness across the little toe and the outside edge of the forefoot, usually within the first twenty minutes on snow rather than straight away. Often mistaken for “my feet are just too fat for ski boots” — they’re not; the boot is too narrow for them.

What We Do About It

We start by measuring the actual width of your foot, not just its length, and picking a shell last to match rather than sizing down and hoping. Where a shell is close but not quite there, we can heat and stretch the shell locally over the problem area — a few millimetres is often all it takes. A wider, higher-volume liner helps too, and we’ll check your footbed is actually supporting the arch rather than letting the foot spread sideways under load, which makes width problems worse.

Boots We’d Start With

  • Lange LX 95 HV — the HV stands for High Volume, and it’s the most generously built shell in our current range. A sensible first boot to try if width has been a problem before.
  • Fischer RC4 120 MV BOA and Head Kaliber 110 MV BOA 2 — medium-volume shells with BOA closure, which distributes pressure more evenly across the top and sides of the foot than traditional buckles.

If none of those feel right once you’re in the chair, we’ll punch or stretch whatever you’ve got on until it does — the shell works for your foot, not the other way round.
